If we can figure out a way to walk on the moon, why can’t we prevent tragedies like George Sodini?

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

I have been reflecting on the senseless LA Fitness shootings in a suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania this week.  The murders and suicide were committed by a 48 year old single man by the name of George Sodini, who had apparently become so isolated and enraged about not ‘having a life’, including a wife, that he decided to express that rage towards innocent women and then, himself.

Could these murders have been prevented?

I just saw on the Today Show that the three victims who died were my peers, including  a 49 year old wife and a single mom in her late 30′s.  I can’t begin to imagine how the families of the victims feel this morning.  There are also several wounded women whose lives are altered forever.

The tragedy got me to thinking,

If we are so bright and so clever we committed to ‘doing what it took’, taking the millions of small steps, energy, sweat and frustration needed to walk on the moon, why aren’t we preventing tragedies like George Sodini?

What do you think?

I know it’s no accident that we reward certain achievements in our society.  We know in fact that the market rewards some pretty obscene things as well, and, we accept it.  (more…)

Doesn’t it seem that the challenges of living and loving in today’s world are more interesting than ever? Today’s world is fast-paced, and, frankly, chaotic in ways that threaten your happiness and prosperity.  Unless, that is: you figure out for yourself: how do I want to live and, how can I support the life I envision for myself?

Back in the wild, wild west, the lone ranger had her ‘hey day’.  In today’s world, being a lone ranger doesn’t work.  You need support for staying true to your vision, your goals and YOUR success.

And, as lesbian women, our challenges, given all of the above, are additionally complex.  We don’t live in ‘closeted’ world anymore, and we can live and love as openly as we want today.  However, letting go of old ways of thinking and being are difficult.  And, while today’s world is more tolerant of who we are, because we are challenging the ‘status quo’ on many fronts, we must be ready for any and all responses to us as we are being who we truly are.

Enter a helpful, supportive, tele-seminar, led by Coach Sappho…

Our teleseminars, led by a Coach Sappho coach, are transformative experiences.  Our founder, Barb Elgin, MSW, LCSW, created Coach Sappho and all of it’s many resources, with today’s lesbian woman in mind.  We’ve been in business serving lesbians since 2001 and, we’ve touched the lives of lesbians in over 45 states and 15 countries.

This seminar is well worth time spending on YOU…

’5 Secrets to an Amazing Life’ is a powerful, one hour program created to support and inspire you in living YOUR most amazing life, however you define it!  In the process of joining Barb for this one hour, you will discover new ideas for creating your most amazing life…starting right away!

You can’t afford not to give yourself the gift of this experience.

Why not start the fall and ‘change of seasons’ on a positive note?

HERE’S THE LOGISTICS: During this one hour call, you will learn 5 cool secrets to experiencing more of what you want in your life.

And, here’s the BONUS: If you begin to use these secrets in your life right away, you will notice positive changes, right away!

Also: You will learn these important tips from the comfort, privacy and convenience of your phone and/or internet connection.  And, if for some reason you don’t make the live call, don’t worry – all registrants will receive a complimentary streaming and mp3 copy of the call to listen to again and again.

Learn Luscious Lesbian Love Tips and meet Coach Sappho in person this November on the largest lesbian cruise ever!

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

I don’t know about you, but this November, I envision you and I meeting IN PERSON for perhaps the first time!  That’s right.  Coach Sappho is providing you with an amazing travel adventure where you can…

  • travel in an ‘eco-friendly’ manner on a modern cruise ship with hundreds (perhaps thousands) of lesbian women
  • talk with me, IN PERSON, about new and exciting ways to ‘liven up your lesbian love life’
  • help out victims of Hurricane Katrina
  • de-stress and spend some quality time, unplugged from everyday life, with yourself and/or your partner (I’m planning some really ‘cool’ meetings for singles only and couples only that you will want to attend I’m sure!)
  • enjoy lots of great food, entertainment, etc.

Sounds awfully luscious and juicy to me, how about you?

Ever since I invited Shannon Wentworth, CEO and founder of the lesbian cruise company, Sweet, to Coach Sappho’s podcast last year, I knew Shannon had a grand vision.  You’ve probably noticed her and Sweet’s presence all over the internet and Sweet sponsors many lesbian events, such as the Dinah, just held a couple of weeks ago in Palm Springs, California, at the Riviera Hotel.

Well, what Shannon has been up to is encouraging lesbians far and near to take her caribbean cruise this coming November.  I hear the ship holds over 1900 so that’s a boatload of lesbians!  The cruise will last 7 days, ship out of New Orleans and traverse the western caribbean.

In addition to the usual amazing stuff you can do on a cruise, Shannon has many other innovative things happening on her cruise which you won’t find on most, including the opportunity for cruisers to ‘give back’ by doing some Katrina rebuilding in New Orleans before the cruise takes off and some great workshops, perhaps even by people like moi!  ;-)

If you are going to attend, be sure you let them know upon registration that Coach Sappho sent you!  And, if you are going to register (or if you already have), please email me and let me know.  If we have a party of at least 10 ladies on the ‘Coach Sappho’ contingent, I’ll definitely attend and, we will get some group goodies, courtesy of Shannon.

Anchors away, my love, anchors away…

Catch Coach Sappho LIVE on these upcoming radio shows…

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

I’m on an ‘interview roll’ these days – and I love it!  Talking to radio hosts all over the country is such a great experience and an honor.  And, it’s so important for me to get the word out that lesbians fall in love, have lasting, great love relationships (including – hopefully – healthy, sizzlin’ sex lives), ask dating questions and voice couple’s concerns just like everyone else!

I’m especially excited to talk with mainstream audiences about ‘what a lesbian love coach can teach everyone about love’, because it’s such a vital topic, for the world, for politics, for each person’s health, family relationships, etc.

Below is information on three live radio appearances I have coming up in the next couple of weeks.  If you can listen in, be sure to do so.  Be sure to tell your family and friends to listen in too!:

This Saturday, April 18, 2009, at 6p ET – I’ll be chatting it up with Greg Halpen, The Gay Guy’s Love Coach.  You can listen in on your computer online at Blogtalkradio!

Monday, April 20, 2009, at 7:30a ET - Catch me live on Larry Whitler’s ‘AM Ocala Live‘ on WOCA Newstalk 1370 AM Marion County’s Information Station, based in my hometown, Ocala, Florida.

Tuesday, April 28, 2009, at 8:30a ET – I’ll be talking live on FM 92 in Minneapolis, Minnesota on KQRS, a ‘classic rock’ station on their morning show.

So be sure to enjoy dinner with me this Saturday and wake up with me on April 20th and 28th!  You’ll love it…   ;-)

Who killed Jenny Schecter on the L Word Series Finale? This psychotherapist and lesbian love coach has a theory…

Monday, March 9th, 2009

Well, hopefully, it’s a great Monday morning for you.  I know I’ve been going to bed earlier and sleeping better so, it feels good.  Did you watch the series finale of L Word last night?  I know you know I did!  Of course everyone is talking it up on social networks around the country this morning.  The main topic of discussion, of course is:

Who killed Jenny?  Why didn’t they tell us?

Here’s my theory on who killed Jenny:

First off, just like when you click at an online video of a story you FIRST have to suffer through a commercial break – what did you think of the final show? I enjoyed the ‘retrospective’ the hour before the finale myself more.  Overall…

Now, back to the L Word drama:  First off, are you frustrated that they didn’t ‘solve’ the mystery of Jenny’s death before the closing credits?  Of course you are, but that’s most likely because they are cleverly going to keep L Word alive now online.  They’ve teased us by directing us to now go online to their show site and watch more scenes of the interrogation of Jenny’s friends.

You’ll have to click the ‘read more’ link below to find out who I think killed Jenny….isn’t the suspense killing you…hahaha

More women coming out as lesbian in their 40′s and beyond

Saturday, March 7th, 2009

Seems the issue of ‘coming out’ later in life as a lesbian continues to be a hot topic in the media.  I received a couple of emails yesterday from people in my networks asking me whether I think ‘latehood lesbianism’ is increasing as a phenomenon and why I think that is.  The magazine More.com did a piece on the topic this month called

Over 40 and Over Men

Great title, btw.  But, seriously, it is no surprise to me that we are seeing an increase in women ‘becoming gay’ later in life.  Hey, I am buddies and live in the same town as the infamous Elaine Weber, who came out at 79!  Isn’t she amazing!?!

Now, most women who knew they were gay, like Elaine, lived in a time and place where it was very risky to come out.  The result became that they either never lived an ‘out’ life or, eventually did come out (at least to themselves, a partner and to other gay friends and allies) in early or mid adulthood.  Today, the situation is much more accepting for women to be who they are and/or explore their sexual orientation.  I’m sure Elaine, if she were in her 40′s today, would probably have ‘come out’ by now.
