When it comes to love relationships, we all seem to instinctively know that one of the keys to keeping love alive is continuing to keep it fun and playing well together.   Easy to do when things are going well, right?

However, what about when things aren’t going so swimmingly? This is truly where we separate the men from the boys, or, the happy versus unhappy couples.  You see, it seems how we handle the difficult moments in our relationship – when we are feeling not-so-playful or positive,  such as when we are frustrated, angry or feel some type of negativity towards our partner or our relationship – determines whether we (and our partner) will continue to feel positive about our relationship and emotionally invest in it…or not!

John Gottman coined this very useful idea, this visual of ‘kicking around the soccer ball’, after observing thousands of gay and straight couples in his notorious love lab.  Gottman discovered there is a big difference between…

the couples who have ‘mastered’ handling conflict and

those couples whose behavior, when it comes to negatively-charged situations, incites an escalation of the conflict, withdrawal in one or both partners, etc.

Couples who handle conflict well kick problems and disagreements around ‘like playing with a soccer ball’.  How does this ‘play’ itself out behaviorally?Â

Lesbian couples who play verbal soccer tend to look at disagreements as

‘outside of themselves’

something they need to ‘kick around’ and look at to either make light of, make a game of, better understand, etc.

Couples who do not play verbal soccer when they disagree tend to

blame the conflict on something inside their partner or themselves (or both)

not be able to see (or consider) any perspective other than their own

The bottom line for lesbian couples is that when you don’t know how to play, chances are you are DOING things in your interactions with each other that sabotage the good feelings you share.  And, when that occurs, you start to disconnect, even if it only begins at a very subtle level.

Over time, these negative behaviors can create a wide gulf between you and, the next thing you know you are playing on opposite teams instead of the same team!

How are you doing? Even if you aren’t coupled, it’s important to look at all of your most important relationships and assess how well the two of you are handling your conflicts.  Gottman’s research also indicates that conflict isn’t the problem: even happy couples argue.  It’s how we handle the more frequent, small, negative interactions we have, as well as the unresolvable problems we share that determines whether we remain happy together or, if we even stay together!

So, the next time you ‘butt heads’ with someone you care about, your best option is to ‘head butt’ the ball onto the playing field and coax your partner to ‘play along’! Â

tomorrow evening 10/27/09 at 6:30p ET.

Janice’s story has been in the national spotlight recently as well as much of the last two or so years since her life took a dramatic turn.

In 2007 Janice’s partner of 18 years, Lisa Pond, died suddenly and unexpectedly due to a brain aneurysm, while they were getting ready to enjoy a family vacation together.  Janice and Lisa probably treasured the vision of that vacation more than most; over the years they’d been amazing foster parents of over 25 children!

As if Lisa’s death wasn’t painful enough, the way Janice was treated in the hospital during Lisa’s final hours was unthinkable.  I can promise you the details will anger you.

And, recently, Janice was treated wrongly again when she learned her lawsuit against the Florida hospital that mistreated her was thrown out of court. We are amazed by Janice and we can’t wait to talk to her to learn more about her life today, her loving family and to find out what’s next for her.

Donna and I are humbled that Janice has chosen to share with us personal information about her life and the details of her own tragedy.  I am certain that Janice’s continuing sacrifice is part of the fabric of gradually changing hearts and minds and leading society closer to full rights and equality for gay and lesbian couples.

Please come to the live show, meet Janice, ask her questions and give her support.

Well, here we are – Valentine’s week.  What are your plans for Valentines? Is Valentines ‘just another day’ for you or do you think it’s not for you because you are single?  Or, if you are in a relationship, what is your ‘grand vision’ for commemorating your relationship?

And, lastly if you have the right to marry, how has marriage impacted your relationship and how do you feel about others in the U.S. NOT having the right to a basic human right you enjoy?

Here’s my suggestion for making sure Valentine’s is one day a celebration that all couples, gay and straight, share equally:

DO something this coming week that supports the marriage equality movement.  That’s right – even if you don’t care about marriage for yourself, how about your GLBT friends and family who want to get married?  Think about them.  Think about the many laws and ‘quality of life’ advantages of marriage that anti-gay amendments and federal laws like DOMA are keeping from us.

If you hesitate to get involved because Valentine’s is a social ‘holiday’ and marriage equality seems to be a political issue, I would encourage you to realize that, often, the personal IS political and, that marriage equality is a human issue not a political one, at it’s essence.

For those of you who are wondering how you can help, here’s a great idea:

Get involved in ‘Freedom to Marry’ activities

That’s right – my colleague Evan Wolfson’s organization has answered the straight world’s ‘Marriage Week USA’ with a week of our own.  Freedom to Marry Week is an opportunity to talk about marriage equality. It’s an opportunity for GLBT’s and allies to celebrate gay and lesbian relationships and the need to equalize marriage for all.

AND HERE’S A BONUS FOR YOU:  Last year I invited Evan Wolfson to join me on Coach Sappho’s Podcast.  So, be sure to go here - http://www.freedomtomarry.org/evan_wolfson/evan_wolfson_interviews.php to catch my interview with Evan last February on Freedom to Marry’s mission, Freedom to Marry Week and his insights as to what was next on the marriage equality front.

If you scroll down to the 5th interview, there’s where I’ll be! What I think is most interesting about my interview with Evan is how he gives all of us a ‘hopeful, helpful’ perspective about the marriage equality ‘battle’ and how it mirrors the success of other civil rights battles in our country’s history.

Be sure to listen to the interview and post right here on Coach Sappho’s Blog your plans for Freedom to Marry Week.

According to my colleague and friend Dan Furmansky from Equality Maryland…

“The Connecticut Supreme Court ruled 4-3 today that it is unconstitutional to deny marriage equality to gay and lesbian couples. The decision overturns a lower court ruling that found no real harm to same-sex couples because Connecticut grants many of the state-level protections of married couples through civil unions. The Supreme Court disagreed with the lower court and ruled that the civil unions scheme is not acceptable and discriminates on the basis of sexual orientation…Connecticut is now the third U.S. state to grant the freedom to marry to same-sex couples, after Massachusetts and California. New York, in addition, recognizes marriages betweens same-sex couples performed in other states.”

Congratulations to Connecticut and thank you to the judges on their state’s supreme court, for voting on the side of truth and fairness!

—————–

Marriage study in the news finds happily married couples have healthier blood pressure-can we apply these findings to lesbian women and lesbian couples?

A behavioral medicine study at Brigham Young University seems to indicate that individuals who are happily married have healthier blood pressures than married individuals who are unhappily married.  Of course, you say!  I liked seeing this study (although the sample was small), because it lends support to what I’ve been saying:Â

Just being married doesn’t ensure you will be healthy and happy.  And, just because you’re single, that doesn’t mean you are doomed to ill health and unhappiness.  What’s the missing link here for both singles and coupled?  HAPPINESS!Â

Couples must find a way to be happy together (it doesn’t ‘just happen’) and singles must find ways to be happy with their single status.Â

While this study focused on heterosexual couples, I would assume results would be similar with lesbian couples.Â

If you’re in a relationship or single and you want to find greater happiness in life and in love, I can help!  Email me and we’ll set up your complimentary coaching consult.

If you’d like to read more about the study above, click here.

—————–

Cynthia Nixon opens up about her lesbian relationship – But Coach Sappho wants to know – When are you going to stop ‘dating’ your partner and commit to her, Cynthia?

I hear Cynthia Nixon, from Sex and The City has been talking openly about her great relationship with her partner, who she’s ‘been dating’ since 2003.

What strikes me as curious is this:  why is it that lesbian couples who’ve been together ‘forever’ are sometimes still characterized as ‘dating’?  Is that how Cynthia would describe her relationship?  Has Cynthia had a civil union or commitment ceremony yet with her partner?  And, if not, is one in their future?  She and her partner have been living together for years now and co-parent Cynthia’s children.  I don’t call that dating, do you???

Hmmm………..

Your comments are welcomed!

See you soon – Happy Easter,

Barb Elgin

Wow, I heard about a fascinating study today that seems to add credence to the belief that astrology is snake oil!  A scientist from the UK looked at the birthdays of 20 million husbands and wives in the UK (in the UK’s 2001 Census) to see ‘if certain star signs were attracted to others ‘.

The scientist didn’t find a correlation between sun sign and who was married to whom.  He reports that the only ‘relationship’ he found was ‘chance’.

What do you think?  I’ve always questioned the whole astrology thing, given I’m probably more scientist than artist at heart.  I do know that I fit some Taurean characteristics (my sun sign), but not others.  Especially as I’ve gotten older, I less and less seem to fit the Bull!    …course, ask those close to me for the ‘whole story’!Â

As long as folks don’t take the whole horoscope thing too seriously, it can be fun.  I’ve always thought astrology a great ‘ice breaker’ or conversation starter/lubricator.  I remember being in a gay golf league years ago and looking forward to getting together with other club members at an area restaurant after playing.  There was one woman in the club, an attorney no less, who loved to ask each of us ‘what is your sign?’ and launch into a comical ‘reading’ designed to tell us how to live our lives, who to love etc.

Also – before you go trashing the boring/nerdy scientists, I have to say that the scientist part of me reminds me that we are limited by the tools we have to observe what is.  So, perhaps we can’t definitively answer whether astrology is true or not!

Ultimately the author of the study believes people will still go on believing in ‘reading the stars’, eventhough his and ‘hundreds’ of other similar studies, seem to dispute the validity of the method.  He even points to celebrity pairings whose star signs should be compatible who had stormy relationships which didn’t last.

Such is the mystery of love and attraction and what people feel drawn to do to find and keep the love they have.  I myself recommend folks try a more conscious, ‘centered’, or, shall we say ‘grounded in reality’ method of finding, growing and cherishing love:  relationship coaching!

Then again, I’m starting to sound ever more like that ‘down to earth’ Bull that I am….Â

…Hello and a happy, gay, NATIONAL COMING OUT DAY to you!  As a life coach whose role it is to ask you the BIG questions that inspire you to live your best life I just couldn’t resist to ask…

What is the most courageous ‘coming out’ action you are willing to take today in honor of National Coming Out Day’?

What action have you been wanting to take, that you know is most likely safe to take, that you’ve been ‘putting’ off, because of a most likely unrealistic fear?Â

Stretch yourself!  And, believe me, when you do, it’ll feel good!!!  Gay or straight, the world needs you to stand up for gays, lesbians, transgenders and bisexuals because they are first and formost human beings – when you do you support human rights for all.Â

And, in case you need to get your creative juices rolling, how about watching the following inspiring, heart-tugging, compassionate video created by the Human Rights Campaign in honor of  National Coming Out Day?  You’ve got to watch this video, which includes ‘words of wisdom’ from well known people such as Coretta Scott King, Rosa Parks, Sharon Stone, Ellen DeGeneres, and many more.

Click here to watch HRC’s webcast – it’s short and, oh so sweet – as a matter of fact, if I were you I’d have some tissues nearby (you’ll need a quicktime plug in to watch, which is easy to download now).

And, lastly, be sure to scroll down to the end of MY post and post YOUR ‘comments’ below!!!

———————————

Also, and this is important – to recognize same sex couples on National Coming Out Day, I’d like to share with you a special message and FREE resource from my colleague and friend, Dr. Laurie Weiss:

Happy Coming Out Day to you!

Something from your past may be keeping you from having the fantastic, loving and supportive relationship you deserve now.

Sometimes relationships just don?t work out. They end abruptly and leave you feeling wounded. You feel angry, scared and sad. You?re afraid to trust, and keep holding back.

When you?re in a new relationship, these feelings get stirred up again in spite of your determined efforts to keep them at bay. It?s really hard to do what it takes to move forward in a new relationship.

You know you need something in order to move on and commit to the relationship you?re in right now.

That?s why I want you to have the important information that will help you release your past in order to enjoy a loving relationship now.

Otto Collins interviewed my husband and I when he was exploring the challenge of helping people heal after a broken relationship.

Jon and I have been married for 46 years and teaching people about relationships for over 35 years. Our book, Recovery from CoDependency: It?s Never Too Late to Reclaim Your Childhood, sold over 40,000 copies years ago and it?s actually still available now.

In answering Otto?s questions, we revealed the secrets to moving into and past your grief, dealing with anger, codependent relationships, clearing blocks and much more. You’re going to love this Reclaiming Yourself interview. You’ll find it very helpful in your healing journey, especially after a relationship break up or divorce ?even if it happened a long time ago.

This interview is contained in a 74 minute long MPU file that you download from a special link and play on your computer or on your ipod or MP3 player. You can even burn it onto a CD if you wish.

We?re offering you this interview as a very special bonus when you purchase your copy of Being Happy Together: How to Create a Fabulous Relationship With Your Life Partner in Less Than an Hour a Week by October 15 or after the first 50 copies are claimed?which ever comes first.

Click here to sign up now and be one of the first to receive this amazing book, while receiving the FREE mp3: Your Ideal Day exerise.

Barb Elgin and Laurie Weiss

p.s.  You know, HRC’s campaign for justice and fairness is called ‘talk about it’.  I find it ironic that THIS is in unison with the ‘ultimate’ message of Laurie’s book – talking about your relationship can and will make it better, if done well.  Laurie can help you do so!

———————————

Welcome home to me!  Wow – I returned home late Monday night after 32 days away and 3,000 road miles later!  Even though the trip was wonderful, personally and professionally, there’s no place like home!

I’m a New Mommy!

That’s right – I arrived home from my trip with a bundle of joy – my miniature pinscher Ruby.   Ruby is 15 years old and remarkably well for that age.  She’s already loving her new home.  In fact, she is lying right beside my feet right now, snoring away!

Ruby is one of my ‘furkids’ from my previous relationship.  My ex is busy busily caring for her other sick dog (Cupid) and her very ill mom.  And, I was truly ready for Ruby now.   So I agreed to take custody of ‘the Rube’.Â

Ruby and I had a rough first night together in a hotel room near ‘South of the Border’ (the South Carolina/North Carolina line).  Ruby was missing her familiar surroundings, Cupid and her mommy.  And, to make matters worse, there was a full length mirror in the room that scared her!

I’m happy to report it’s been pretty ‘smooth sailing’ since that first night.  She’s adjusting very well in my home.  She’s already a hit with the neighbors, chased a lizard and taken her first golf cart ride!

Phew!  I’ve had an enjoyable, restful and yet busy, week back home.  I’ve only begun to scratch the surface of getting settled, however, Ruby and I are enjoying some fantastic fall/winter prelude weather here in Central Florida (mid 80′s during the day, light breeze, low/no humidity).  I consider the break in the heat a blessing for Ruby as her body is no doubt adjusting to the southern clilmate.

Rosie O’Donnell:Â Aren’t we glad she’s a bigmouth???

Yesterday, I took a few minutes away from unpacking to watch Rosie O’Donnell on The View.  I love how natural and, well, AUTHENTIC Rosie is on the show.  Now, of course, right wing activists are probably saying she’s ‘making it political’ or ‘shoving her gay rights/lifestyle in the public’s face’ but Rosie is just being herself instead of hiding.

I hear Rosie brought her wife, Kelli, to her first show and, pointed her out in the audience.  And, yesterday she took an opportunity when one of the hosts referred to couples as ‘he and she’ to say, “…and for some of us it’s ‘he and he’ or ‘she and she’.” The other hosts naturally mention their spouses, children and families too, when their personal lives relate to whatever it is they are discussing, so why should Rosie be any different?  I think Babs Walters was quite the slick one in selecting Rosie for the show.  I for one am so grateful to Babs!

Secrets to keeping your love alive…

Today, I caught some of the Ellen Degeneres show and one of her guests was Ashton Kutcher.  What a breath of fresh air he is!  Ashton, who is on the cover of this month’s Details Magazine, was called ‘perhaps the best husband there is’.  When Ellen asked him why he said, ‘because I have the best wife in the world’.  He also mentioned one of the secrets to their success (they’ve been together four years and they just celebrated their first wedding anniversary) is to…

KEEP IT NEW (or you’re through)

I thought this great wisdom from the mouth of a mere babe in the woods of love and romance.  Sounds counterintuitive doesn’t it?  Why in the heck do you have to worry about ‘new-ness’ when one of the main reasons you entered a committed relationship was to enjoy the comfort of the familiar.

However, familiarity can breed contempt.  And, as many of us who coach or counsel couples know, contempt is one of the so-called ‘Four Horsemen of the Apocolypse’, those dreaded grim reapers that will kill a relationship.   So, keep in mind, all things being equal, the more familiar you get with your amour, the more likely you are to fall into behaviors that can threaten the long term satisfaction and success of your relationship.   I said ‘more likely’, which means it doesn’t have to be that way, it’s just that most relationships tend towards ‘chaos’ without attention to what works.

Why does too much familarity threaten relationships?  When we get too comfortable, some of us start taking our partners and our relationships for granted.   Others adopt the attitude that we know all there is to know about our partner.  Both attitudes when acted upon will get us into hot water.

It is my opinion that gay and lesbian couples can be especially at risk if the four horsemen raise their heads because many of us don’t have access to the ties many straight couples enjoy.  Ties such as children, family support and the financial benefits and securities marriage confers.  Ties that reward couples who ride out the inevitable rough spots all long term relationships go through.

However, I’m going to use some ‘tough love’ here:  even though society isn’t as supportive of gay relationships as it is for straight ones, this doesn’t let gay couples off the hook.  And, while most gays and lesbians need to get more involved in changing the system that discriminates against them, real change begins at home and one of the most important things all of us can do to ‘plead our case’ for marriage equality is to share more openly with the world that we are in loving, same sex relationships and live in those relationships with love.

So, don’t get too comfortable or familiar with your partner.   Shake it up…all the time!  New doesn’t have to mean uncomfortable.  In fact, new can be exciting and risky in a healthy way or as simple as approaching your relationship each day with fresh eyes and ears.

What can you do this week to keep it fresh and new with your partner?

And, if you’re single, be sure to make note of this post and be sure to file it away for the days ahead!Â

C U soon!
