Freedom to Marry Week is coming…how will you celebrate?
Friday, January 9th, 2009As you know, Valentine’s Day isn’t far away – a little more than a month from now. But, did you know there is also another important holiday coming the week of Valentines called
Freedom to Marry Week
That’s right. Started by my friend and colleague Evan Wolfson, Freedom to Marry Week is a series of daily activities, conceived to educate and bring greater awareness to the issue of marriage equality.
Now, you know, the topic of marriage equality is being talked about everywhere these days. We must thank people like Evan, who helped the ‘discussion’ get to the point it is today. Evan is one of those pioneers who has been planting ‘marriage equality’ seeds for almost three decades. Before it was popular to do so, before it was in the news, before it was even really okay to expect such a right, etc.
Because of the vision of people like Evan, we are moving closer to full marriage equality for ALL Americans. A little closer each and every day.
I recommend you do two things today for marriage equality…
1. Visit Freedom to Marry’s website and sign up for one or more of their Freedom to Marry Week activities.
2. Listen in on my interview with Evan, which we did a year ago. BTW, Evan was quite a hit with Coach Sappho listeners. Don’t forget too, that the following interview occurred in February 2008, several months BEFORE marriage was legalized in California, Prop 8 reversed that court decision, etc.
I promise you, that, despite the anti-gay actions in several states last year, including Maryland, California and Florida, when you listen below to the ‘wisdom of Evan’, you will feel more confident than ever that not only is marriage equality possible, it is probable, with your support!
Here’s the interview:
Happy Turkey Day to ya! As I was finishing up some work last evening (or dare I say earlier this morning!), I came across a great article by a group of gay activists (including clergy), suggesting ways of talking to your loved about same sex marriage this holiday season. The article concerns Proposition 8 in California, but could just as well apply to those of us in Florida who are under Amendment 2, Arizona. Nationally, don’t forget we are still discriminated against legally by DOMA – the Defense of Marriage Act and there is the threat (perhaps small but still there) of someone re-starting the campaign – again – federally, to add a Constitutional Amendment against same sex marriage.
