This past week, Donna Tara Lee and I recorded our 2nd
GLBT Talk with Barb and Donna Show
We’re still getting our feet week, however, our show was chock full of information and commentary from Donna and yours truly.
Donna got the show off to a great start by talking about the issue of the new state-wide anti-gay marriage amendment being put forth by conservative forces in Maine.
Donna and I also explored legal gay adoption (and it’s challenges) in the State of Florida (which is, by the way, to date, the only state in America where it is illegal to adopt if you are gay, believe it or not).
What is scary is that there are hate mongers in other states trying to make gay adoption illegal too, in their states. And, you can bet there are anti-gay, hate-filled organizations that operate on a national level pushing to get gay adoption outlawed nationally.
What can you do? Learn the facts. I’ll say that again: WE HAVE ‘THE FACT’S, and the research on our side. Don’t fear these types of people and organizations. Their tactics aren’t about love, even though they will try to say their intentions are to ‘save souls’ and save our country. Their strategies are mostly of the ‘bullying’, ‘distracting’ and ‘fear-instilling’ types.
News flash: the only ‘saving’ today’s citizens in our country needs, is help with the usual day-to-day challenges of living: you know, issues like how am I going to make the next mortgage payment, save for retirement, get along with my spouse, etc.
Gay people need to get noisier like the far right has been good at doing. At least we have more than ‘hot air’ to share! Get more involved in politics at the state level. Educate your representatives and congress persons about the issue. Help politicians who are educated properly about issues like sexual orientation and gender orientation get elected or re-elected.
The bottom line is as such: elect only officials who understand that GLBT people deserve equal rights across the board and, particularly, in the area of adoption and child care, this country needs STRONG, YET CARING LEADERS who ‘get it’ that sexual orientation is NOT a factor when it comes to one’s ability to raise children!
Where can you go to learn more about how to educate your local and state officials on the issue of gay adoption?
I would point you to begin by reading an informative article by Ramon Johnson on the subject called “What they aren’t telling you about gay adoption”. The ‘they’ Ramon is referring to are those who think gay adoption should be outlawed.
GLBT Talk with Barb and Donna, Show #2 also included information from me on where to go to learn to communicate and manage time more sanely in today’s hyper-connected world as well as tips on effective decision making.
The show lasted 30 minutes. By the way, we’ve now decided to go to a 45 minute show format because we are having trouble getting in all we want to share with you in 30 minutes. Our next show is Tueday, September 22, 2009 at 6:30p ET.
