Happy, happy Thursday to you! As I head into a busy day, I wanted to remind you about some really important legal news I hope you are already aware of (or if you aren’t, definitely read on) AND some really cool information I came across this week on women in the workplace I’d like to share with you.
Here’s the important legal news: Today is a very exciting and important day for all Californians, as well as all Americans. Today is the day that the Supreme Court of California will hear legal arguments for and against whether or not the anti-gay, anti-marriage equality Proposition 8 as voted on last November should stand or not.
As you may or may not know, Ken Starr, the infamous prosecutor from the Bush years, is arguing FOR Prop 8. And, even before today’s hearing, he’s already begun the legal processes of undoing the 18,000 or so same sex marriages that occurred prior to the passage of Prop 8 in a cold and uncaring act that would put many families at risk.
Whether you are for marriage equality or not, the court’s ruling will be huge. Don’t kid yourself – this is a legal battle we must eventually win, because, our financial futures ARE deeply affected by our ability to choose to marry or not. That’s a topic for another day but, if you ever want to discuss it, I’m game!
Even if we lose the battle today regarding Prop 8, we will as a community still move forward and press to have our equal rights recognized, I’m sure. But, I think gay Californians have an awfully good chance of winning.
What do you think? Let’s talk it up right here on the blog…post your comments.
Secondly, I wanted to share with you some juicy information that I came across this week regarding women, the workplace and economy:
Last Sunday, I caught parts of some of the ‘talking head’ shows and, I think I was watching Meet the Press when I saw Dee Dee Myers, former president Bill Clinton’s press secretary, talking about her new book, which I found pretty cool. I think you’ll agree the title is ‘ball-sy’…
Why Women Should Rule the world by Dee Dee Myers
Also out recently is an article in the Financial Times called ‘Women Shine in the Downturn‘. The article shares results of a study showing that, when women are ‘in charge’ companies do better financially! Is that not cool or what? Dee Dee may be onto something (if there was ever any doubt!)
Here’s a quote from the article…
